DMA-205 (fall 05) Project 1-Print Design
Due
Monday, 10/18/04:Work in progress review
Finals week:Completed project
Description
Incorporate your applied exercises into an 11”x8.5” InDesign print
file (representing a spread of two 5.5”x8.5” pages, see below).
Build a design template on the master page, using placeholders for the image
and for your text.
Use stylesheets to control typographic elements.
Requirements/Procedure
The following must appear in your document:
- Front cover w/table of contents
- Back Cover w/date, credits etc.
- 12 Exercises w/title, date of completion, and description/observations about
what you learned and challenges you faced.
- Supporting sketches, inspirational graphics, etc. that contributed to each design.
The document should be set up as follows:
- Create a new folder called username_pr1_205 on the desktop of the computer
station you are working at. Copy all of your applied exercises into the folder.
- Create a new document in InDesign, at 11” wide x 8.5” high.
Set margins to .25” or less, and make sure facing pages is turned off.
- Save your InDesign file into your folder.
- On your master page, drag a guide to the 5.5” mark. Draw a frame on
the right half of the page to hold your images.
- Draw a textbox on the right half of the page to hold your text. Type in
“Title”, hit return. Type in “Date”, hit return. Type
in “Description”. You now have 3 paragraphs. Style each paragraph
as you wish, and then, with the cursor in the paragraph, make a new Paragraph
Stylesheet for that paragraph. Title the stylesheet after the paragraph it
was taken from; make sure the stylesheet is applied to each paragraph by clicking
in the paragraph and selecting the appropriate style from the stylesheet list.
- Draw a textbox and go to Type>Insert Special Character>Auto Page Number.
Style the page number as you wish and create a paragraph stylesheet for it.
- (optional) Add any graphics that will appear throughout the document; a
logo, a graphic element like a stripe or arch, etc.
- Drag 12 pages from the master page section into the document section, in
the page layout palette. Each page represents a “spread” of how
the book will look when spread open (laid flat) to any page*.
- On the first spread (page 1), design the front and back cover. The front
cover goes on the right, the back on the left.
- On the rest of the pages, shift-apple click the frames and text boxes to
unlock them, and import graphics/add text as needed. Make sure your exercises
are sized comfortably in the frame they are placed in; remember to right-click
on them, and select Content>Fitting>Fit content proportionally, and
Content>Fitting>Center content.
Printing
Each book will require 6 sheets of quality inkjet paper. If possible, use double-sided.
Pages with exercises on them will need to be run through the printer twice*.
Proof on plain paper for direction/registration. Print at high quality after
testing.
Score each spread down the middle, stack spreads, and staple WITH THE COVER
ON TOP. Fold flat and trim edges with ruler/xacto
Turn in
